Reuters reporter/editor William “Bill” Billerson was fired this afternoon after an anonymous tip linked his coverage of the Russo-Turkish arms scandal to the leak of a French diplomatic cable to major international news outlets. The contents of the cable (full text below) consist of a senior French diplomat urging his home government to quietly deploy police and military forces at home and abroad immediately (including France’s carrier battle group, the Charles de Gaulle). This cable has sent warning bells to other countries in the region, and Turkey has increased the number of military exercises. Whether or not the French government will continue to carry out this directive remains to be seen.
“Threat of attack by radical Islamic terror groups high in response to Chechen rebel threat. Secure the streets an transport networks. Locate all on watch lists pertaining to crisis and place under surveillance. Charles de Gaulle to put to sea immediately for safety status. High alert. Recommend deployment between Cyprus and Crete. Exercise restraint in official dialogue. Increase military and police presence in public areas, in all major urban centres. Report back on progress of directive.
